By Tom Emery New Year’s Eve and Day mark the traditional end of the holiday season and are celebrated by millions of Americans. But in the Civil War and other American conflicts, there was little cause for celebration as the calendar changed from one year to the next. On the last day of 1862, thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers clashed in the first day of battle at Stones River, Tenn., one of the bloodiest engagements of the western theater. After a successful effort on December 31, southern commander Braxton Bragg sent a telegraph d...
This year as the Bethlehem song stirs in the winds of cities, the journey of the God child is still a long and lonely one, as he is carried along the hills and valleys of time seeking a birthing place where he may be born in the hearts of men. As in the days of old the streets are "dreamless" while restless souls look for refuge from their sinfulness; beautiful hope shivers in the stillness as the images of evil rejoice in the cascading violence of a lost goodness, and the star shining wonder of the sacred myste squeeze its blanket into a...

By: Jill Pertler I read a quote that resonated with me on multiple levels. Upon checking it out, it originated from someone known as MrsMopar on iFunny and it went something like this: “I admire those with hairstyles. I don’t have a hairstyle, but thankfully I have hair. Most days it has zero caterpillars in it. That’s about as good as it’s going to get.” My first reaction to this quote was a wry smile and perhaps even a modicum of laughter. How many of us have found ourselves with caterpillar-laden hair? Okay, not many. So why does this reso...
By Tom Emery Some say it just isn’t Christmas without the poinsettia, a colorful addition to the holiday season. Outside of his native state, the flower’s namesake has been lost to history. The plant is named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico, who distributed cuttings of the flower he found during a diplomatic excursion. Botany was one of many interests for Poinsett, a renaissance man ahead of his time. Born on March 2, 1779 in Charleston, S.C., Poinsett was educated in England and spoke six languages. One sch...

Merry Christmas! I want to thank you for printing the letters to Santa from the past. It brings some good memories to some of us. Life was so much simpler back in those days. Kids asked for so little by today's standards. Some of these letters were from the early 1900s nearly 50 years before my time. And yet, I remember some of the names of the youngsters. Reno, who employed my late husband in his bowling alley, Dorrell Kilduff, Fred McBrian (I wonder if he was our dentist), and so many other names of the past come to mind. The children asked...
