By Tom Emery The men who fought, and won, World War II are part of the Greatest Generation. But during the war, their Christmases were not so great. Half a world away from home at holiday time, American troops were usually in the field, fighting in some of the war’s biggest battles. Though they made the best of Christmas, it was a lonely time both on the front and at home. Christmas in 1941 came just 18 days after Pearl Harbor, so the first Yuletide during major American involvement came the next year. American forces in the South Pacific l...
Thursday, June 28, 1923 -- HEARD PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS -- Quite a number of Staunton people on Thursday evening heard the address delivered by President Harding at the Colesium at St. Louis and chances are that most of them did so with a greater degree of comfort than the audience in St. Louis. Radio brought the message to Staunton and the owners of several of the larger outfits entertained great crowds, the chief places of assembly being at the home of Dr. McBrien and at the place of Mr. Lambert in Klondike. The instruments transmitted the...

Macoupin County has been issued a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to David Harris, Director of the Illinois Department of Revenue. The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier”, is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law. This equalization is particularly important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (e.g. school districts, junior college districts, fire protection distr...

At a gathering of “church folks”, I found myself embraced with a strange and awesome feeling. It all happening so plain and ordinary as the singing moved along. At one point I saw a tall, shorthaired woman in blue jeans wipe tears from her eyes as something from the moment touched her soul. It all felt down beat, until the announcement came. “0ne of the women, the pastor said, will play for us a song on the old an ornate organ.” I hadn’t really noticed it for the lighting was dim, but there i lay in the shadows at the far side of the sanctuary...

Life can be, and often is, hectic. The simplest things can become the biggest obstacles which turn an ordinarily calm event into something incomprehensibly frustrating. Everyone has those moments. They are the Achilles Heel to the mood and positivity of our days. But regardless of the hardships, irritations, and “downers” that surround daily life, there is joy. But what is joy? Webster defines joy as “the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.” Essentially, it is a state t...
Gun owners face a Jan. 1 deadline to register their assault weapons with the state under Illinois’ assault weapons law. Between the lawsuits and ongoing policymaking, the exact guns, accessories and ammunition covered under the Protect Illinois Communities Act remain unclear to many gun rights advocates, who point out that the ban includes some of the most popular models in the country. The assault weapons ban went into effect when Gov. JB Pritzker signed it in January 2023, immediately prohibiting the sale in Illinois of a long list of w...
