Christmas in the Park enjoyed its grand opening last week with the official lighting at Duda Park on Friday, Dec. 2. This Saturday, Dec. 10, activities there continue. The Staunton Lions Club will be hosting our Secret Santa program with food certificates for families and senior citizens in need. It is their goal to help those in our community who live within the Staunton Fire Protection District. They supply toys/gifts for children up to 15 years of age for the families receiving food certificates. They request that no children be brought to the location of the pickup. The Midstate Collectors Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 14, at Maverick Steaks and Spirits restaurant in Litchfield. After losing their opener to Madison, the Staunton High School basketball team came back with two quick wins. They outscored Roxana in every quarter to take the 44-24 win on Nov. 29. On Nov. 30, the Bulldogs added another win by defeating Bunker Hill. This game was tied 33-33 at the half and Bunker Hill actually led 38-35 after three quarters. The Staunton Terriers had a great week last week, as both the 7th and 8th grade teams went 3-0 in their own tournaments to claim championship titles on their home floor. The 8th grade defeated Gillespie, Nokomis, and Southwestern to win their bracketed event, while the 7th graders defeated Nokomis, Litchfield, and Bunker Hill to win a round robin affair. The 7th grade Lady Terriers basketball team had earned their way to the Illinois State Tournament at Auburn with their 22-0 record. In their first game at Auburn, Staunton faced another undefeated team, Pittsfield Pikeland (24-0). Pittsfield Pikeland defeated Staunton 30-9. This loss ended the Terrier’s season with an admirable 22-1 record. Pittsfield Pikeland went on to defeat Washington MS 58-28. By Tom Emery Several area high school basketball teams will participate in a 16-team shootout to honor the legacy of a beloved area broadcaster. The fourth annual T. Todt Shootout vs. Cancer event will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, at Hillsboro High School, and will feature five boys’ and three girls’ games.
