By: Jill Pertler For much of my life, I’ve been the inviter. I enjoyed planning and inviting people to those plans. But in the last few years I haven’t invited much of anyone anywhere. I didn’t have the heart for it. I lacked momentum and (to be honest) felt broken so I took on a rather new role. I found myself waiting to be invited. Not at first. At first I didn’t want to be invited anywhere. I couldn’t plan or commit from today to tomorrow. I couldn’t plan or commit from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m....

Thursday, June 21, 1923 -- THIEVES VISIT TWO PLACES HERE SUNDAY -- Brubaker & Smith Garage and the Standard Station are Robbed -- Thieves were unusually active in this city on Sunday evening, pulling off two jobs and getting away with a haul of considerable proportions. The Brubaker & Smith garage was entered and a sum of cash stolen from the safe and the Standard Oil filling station was again visited and about $200 was secured there. At the Brubaker garage entrance was gained by breaking a glass from the rear door in the building and then...
by Tom Emery The first Thanksgiving is often associated with the Pilgrims. But President Lincoln was the first to make it official. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the official designation of Thanksgiving. Lincoln’s declaration in 1863 is the most lasting of the nine proclamations for a day of thanks issued during his presidency. The idea of a thanksgiving was nothing new. On Oct. 3, 1789, George Washington had issued a proclamation for a day of thanksgiving, scheduled for Nov. 26 of t...

The Ill. Department of Transportation, ISP and law enforcement agencies throughout the state are reminding the public to buckle up and drive sober this Thanksgiving. Motorists will see hundreds of additional seat belt enforcement zones and other enforcement patrols looking for seat belt law violators and drug- and alcohol-impaired drivers through Nov. 28. "Unfortunately, some drivers and their passengers will travel without ever buckling their seat belts. Seat belts save lives. It really is that simple," said IDOT's Director of Highways...
There has been an uptick in student absences compared to last year at this same time. While it is not encouraged that children come to school sick, it is encouraged that they be in attendance. The State of Ill. allows ten excused absences per school year. Anything beyond that can result in truancy referrals. When students aren’t in the building, they miss information, assignments and assessments. It has been noticed that many of those students who are absent frequently have lower grades and academic performance....
