    This German Day parade took place in Staunton in 1908 and shows the north side of Main Street. Much of Staunton's population was German in those days and there was great pride in what the German culture had contributed to the community. In 1917, with the advent of World War I, there was an overall suspicion of Germans.     Vandalia continued their path to the playoffs Friday night by winning their Homecoming game vs. Staunton 48-12. The Bulldogs were the first to score with just under 8 minutes left in the first quarter. Cody Ury completed a pass to Braden Buffington good for 18 yards and a Bulldog TD.     The Staunton boys' soccer team had quite the reversal of fortune from its previous week. After going 1-3 against some very tough opponents and struggling to put the ball in the net last week, the goals started to pour in like the flood gates had opened up.     The Staunton girls volleyball team traveled to Carlinville Thursday, Sept. 29, and defeated the Lady Cavaliers in two sets of 25-21. Haris Legendre led the team in kills with 12, followed by Danielle Russell with 7. Kennedy Legendre and Taylor Nolan each had 3 kills. Grace Bekeske and Nolan each had 1 block. Kylie Lucykow and K.     The boys and girls South Central Conference golf tournament was held at Indian Springs Golf Course in Fillmore on Monday, Sept. 26. There were 10 boys teams participating in the tournament and six girls teams. The Litchfield boys golf team took first place with 315 strokes on 18 holes.   • Bird banding at Bremer Sanctuary provides vital information

    A new project was started at Bremer Sanctuary this spring with the banding of the nest box nestlings. Bird banding is a tool that enables biologists to obtain information about birds, much of which could not be acquired in any other way. Each nestling is fitted with a special, lightweight aluminum leg band that is inscribed with a unique nine-digit number.
