The Chamber of Commerce's event, Strassenfest, was a hit for the second year in a row. This was the City of Staunton's second year of hosting the event, and it's safe to say that this is a community event that proved to be a great time for all during the month of Oct. John M. Patton, 68, of Springfield, Ill., died on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 17, 1955, in Staunton, to Peter J. and Rosemary A. Baumann Patton. Irene Louise Gorenz, 94, of rural Alhambra, Ill., died on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, at her residence. She was born on Wednesday, April 10, 1929 in Chicago, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Pezdek) Pirok. She married John H. Gorenz on Oct. 4, 1952, in Livingston. John preceded Irene in death on Jan. 26, 1994. Irene worked as a support person with the Shell Refinery and was also a caregiver for both family and close friends. Sixteen members of the Staunton FFA Chapter competed in the Section 15 Forestry career development event on Thursday, Sept. 14, at Beaver Dam Park with 127 other FFA members from around the section. In 1934, Staunton High School held their first Homecoming. In 1986, they celebrated 50-plus years of SHS Homecomings. Dedicated teachers went through all the records and yearbooks and gathered a list of all Staunton Homecoming queens, contacted as many as they humanly could and invited them all to attend the 1986 Homecoming Football Game.
