The Staunton High School volleyball girls started their season with five wins. They played Metro-East Edwardsville and Springfield Lutheran in tournament play on Aug. 25, winning both matches (2-1 and 2-0). They played Triad in a non-conference match on Aug. 26 and won 2-0. Also on Aug. 26, they played LaSalle - Peru winning 2-1 and Hartsburg - Emden winning 2-1 in tournament play. The Annual Golf Tournament held to benefit the Friends of Community Hospital of Staunton has been scheduled for Oct. 6 at Timber Lakes Golf Course. This annual tournament helps to pay for capital projects at Community Hospital of Staunton so the community is always encouraged to get involved in this annual event. The VFW Post 1241 in Staunton is now selling QOH tickets. They will be holding a Queen of Hearts Drawing every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Proceeds go to help support Veteran Programs. The VFW Post 1241 is also a cooling center for Staunton citizens. Anytime they are open, you are welcome to come in an cool off....

The Worden Public Library District will hold its annual Book Fair on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. to noon. Hundreds of fiction and nonfiction books, as well as DVDs, will be available. The fair will be located in the shaded area behind the library. This year we will again have no set prices for items. Customers may take as many items as they want and give donations to the library for whatever amounts they choose. Proceeds from the fair will be used to purchase supplies and books for the library. The Macoupin County Veterans Assistance Commission will be in Benld on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Superintendent Bobby Scott will be at the Cahokia Township Office. He will be able to help qualified veterans and their families with claim work and assistance such as shelter, food, utilities, etc. The Veterans Assistance Commission is an agency that is operated by and for veterans. The Commission provides aid to those military veterans and their families that reside in Macoupin County that may qualify for need and assistance....
