  • Worden man gets 7-year federal sentence

    District judge sentenced a Worden man to serve seven years in federal prison after he admitted to possessing more than 600 images of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Joseph Vieth, 36, was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine, $5,000 in special assessments and $6,000 in restitution to the victims.     Staunton Ribfest will happen this Saturday, Aug. 26th, at the Firemen’s Park. It promises to be an early and long day for the competitors/cookers since they are scheduled to be set-up at 6 a.m. Ribs will be distributed and team meetings will be held at 7 a.m. Judging is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. and awards will be announced at 4 p.m. Prizes include $500 for first, $300 for 2nd, $250 for 3rd, and $150 for 4th.     Ronald “Ron” Leonard Windau, 61, of Springfield, Ill., died on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born on Aug. 14, 1961, in Staunton, to Leonard August and Sandra Lee (Jung) Windau. He was a lifelong resident of Springfield and a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.     Earl W. Thiems, 86, of New Douglas, Ill., died at Anderson Hospital in Maryville on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023. He was born on Jan. 26, 1937, in Old Ripley, the son of the late John and Emma Hemann Thiems. He married Dorothea Driesner on Jan. 26, 1963, in Grantfork, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 2001. He was employed as a sheet metal worker at McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis, Mo.     On Thursday, Aug. 10, the women's Thursday golf league experienced a beautiful day of golf at the SCC. Golfing was great for all teams, however, three teams came out on top. The low gross was the team of Deb McNaughton, Kim Meyer, and Sue Stiegemeier (40).     The Staunton High School boys golf team won a quad match on Friday, Aug. 18th at Timber Lakes, with a team score of 174. Gillespie fininshed 2nd with 229, Auburn was third with 234 and Mt.
