Staunton’s 8th annual Balloon Glow, sponsored by our Chamber of Commerce and the City of Staunton Tourism, will be in Firemen’s Park, 800 Montgomery Street this Saturday, August 19, starting at 4 p.m. Weather permitting, the balloons will be inflated with the colors becoming even more beautiful as the evening skies darken. The “glow” is expected to last just one hour after sunset. On Aug. 4, Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced Community Development Block Grants. While Staunton received a DCEO grant in the amount of $678,705 for infrastructure, they were not awarded a Housing Rehabiliation grant. Of the 13 towns that received the grants, none were in this portion of the state. By Austin Grabow At the City Council meeting held Monday night, the council approved a resolution appointing Jack Daugherty to the position of zoning hearing officer for the city of Staunton. The City of Staunton previously appointed Gina Verticchio to the position of zoning hearing officer. However, the city was made aware that Verticchio could no longer serve in that capacity due to a conflict associated with a new job she has taken. Friday, Aug. 18, is the final day anyone will be allowed to enter Staunton’s Ribfest cooking competition. The actual competition will be held Aug. 26th at the Firemen’s Park in Staunton. Mayor Neuhaus shared the history of the Ribfest. The chamber ran it for two years and lost $10-12K each year. Then it moved to the City who put in $8-$10K per year in bands and other needs plus another $10K in ribs. This event is a lot of work, and the City has never made money in past years. Barbara Quade, 93, of Litchfield, Ill., formerly of Staunton, passed away on Aug. 13, 2023, at Copper Creek Memory Care Center of Litchfield with family at her side. Barbara was born in Carbondale, a daughter of William and Florence (Crain) Brummett. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1947. Terry Soens, 76, of Williamson, Ill.,died on Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at the Alhambra Care Center in Alhambra. He was born on July 7, 1947, in Litchfield, the son of Orville and Irene (Mellas) Soens.
