by Kelly Costa The Staunton City Council accepted a plan for operation and maintenance of Ginseng Creek storm sewer at the meeting held Monday night. The reconstruction of the Ginseng Creek box culvert doesn't require a user connection program since it operates by way of natural drainage through the area that it serves. Drainage from the downtown area will migrate by surface drainage and collect into inlets and then drain through the Ginseng Creek. No program is necessary for this project. The Tour de Donut bicycle race took off from Staunton on Saturday morning, July 8, with some of the best weather for the event in years. Temperatures in the low 70s ushered the riders out of town on their round-trip doughnut-eating circuit. Many riders chose to ride without eating any doughnuts at all, while others ate as many doughnuts as they could to cut their time and most just enjoyed a leisurely ride and a doughnut or two. Children going into pre-K, K, 6th, 9th, or 12th grades have medical requirements that must be met in Illinois. Also students in 6th-12th grades that play sports require a physical. A physical and immunization clinic will be held at Staunton Schools on Aug. 3 through the Macoupin County Public Health Department. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments will be on a first come, first serve basis. No walk-ups will be accepted. Registration closes on July 27. Concordia Hall will be collecting school items through the end of July. They will then donate all items collected to the school so teachers can restock for the new school year. Concordia Hall opens at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and they are also open at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Your donations are greatly appreciated. There was perfect weather Thursday for the ladies golf league. Nice scoring – low gross was the team of Kim Meyers, Martha Riley and Sue Stiegemeier (39). They also had low putts (12). Low net was the team of Linda Best, Rosemarie Pickerill and Linda Rohe. Thanks to the grounds crew for taking such good care of us. Stephanie also provided a great lunch. Steven James Moss, 41, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Thursday, June 29, 2023. Steven was born to Gerry and Glenda (Hefer) Moss of Phoenix on Feb. 23, 1980. Steven was a member of Redeemer Reformed Baptist Church in Phoenix and had a very active teaching ministry in sharing God’s word to young adults throughout his life. Fred Allen Koller, 69, of Walshville, Ill., died on Monday, July 3, 2023, at his home. Fred was born on Aug. 1, 1953, in Granite City, to Charles and Vivian (Lanham) Koller. He married Marcia Barker on Aug. 13, 2001, and she survives. He worked at the former Granite City Steel as a steel mill operator. In his spare time, Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Margaret Mary "Mag" Rolando, 74, of Gillespie, Ill., died at her residence on Saturday, July 8, 2023. She was born Nov. 25, 1948, in Litchfield, to Ernest and Catherine (Fenoglio) Rolando. She married Alan F. Rolando. She was retired after having been an administrative assistant for the State of Illinois. She was also secretary for SS Simon and Jude Church. Harold N. Heigert, 93, of Staunton, Ill., died at his residence on Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was born March 28, 1930, in Staunton to Benjamin and Frances (Dietz) Heigert. He married Loretta Mlekush on Sept. 27, 1958, in Vandalia, and she survives. Harold was a supervisor at Granite City Steel in Granite City for over 30 years. The July 6 meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by president, Gerri Cook. There were 25 members present at the meeting. The Lord's Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance were said. The American Red Cross continues to see a concerning trend – blood donations are being sent to hospitals faster than they are coming in. The Red Cross has collected about 50,000 fewer blood donations than needed over the last two months.
