The 34th running of the Tour De Donut in Staunton will be held this Saturday, July 8. Registration is online only, and we hope you have all done that by now since there is no race day registration. The City of Staunton has again teamed with the St. Louis BBQ Society to provide trained and formal judging practices in their annual Ribfest. The 2023 Ribfest has been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Staunton Firemen’s Park. One change to the rules and operations from last year regards “cooking site.” Each team must cook the distributed ribs at their assigned location. Each year, the Staunton Clergy Association provides 75 to 100 backpacks and supplies to children in need within the Staunton School system. They are reaching out to businesses, organizations and individuals in our community to help with this project through monetary donations (made payable to St. Paul UCC) or items needed. The Heritage Concert Band will begin their summer concert series in Staunton on Thursday, July 6. The concerts will continue on the next three Thursdays – July 13, 20 and 27, at 7:30 p.m. each night. The annual children's concert will be performed on July 20. The concerts take place on Pearl Street behind the Staunton Pubic Library. The Tour De Donut bicycle race will be taking off from Staunton this Saturday, July 8. Each year, as the plans for the race are developed to be held in Staunton, a lot of pre-event work as well as day-of-the race activities are required to be sure everything goes off as scheduled and as smoothly as possible. Edward Thomas Purdy, 96, of Gillespie, Ill., died at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, on Monday, June 26, 2023. He was born July 7, 1926, in Sawyerville, to Robert and Ann Ferrie Purdy. He married MaryLou White on July 2, 1960, in Gillespie, and she preceded him in death. He was retired after having been a Missouri Lutheran Synod clergy for over 30 years. Andrew Patrick Dennis Heinemeier, 68, of Bunker Hill, Ill., died June 29, 2023, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He was born in Jerseyville on April 14, 1955, to John and Lela (Roman) Heinemeier. Andy married Ria Norton, on April 1, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nev., and they were married for 31 years. Andy and Ria were hosts for foreign exchange student, Jana Geerhardt, who they “adopted” as their own. Avery Cooper, 80, of Gillespie, Ill., died at his residence on June 28, 2023. He was born May 24, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo. He was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Army after having served from 1961-1989. He loved dogs, fishing, golfing and sailing. He is survived by his children, MaryAlice Cooper of Gillespie, Teddy (Shannon) Cooper of Gillespie; and grandchildren, Gabriel Melchert and Orion Hoffman. It was an extremely hot day but we had some good golf scoring. The low gross was a tie between the teams of Karen Crosslin and Linda Rohe and Sue Stiegemeier and Rosemarie Pickerill (41). Low net was the team of Denise Hemphill, Cynthia Albrecht Tipler and Martha Riley (22). The low putts were Sue and Rosemarie (10).
