By: Jill Pertler My grand daughter likes to watch a certain movie – over and over again. In it, the protagonist belts out a message in song: Let it go. There’s lots to be learned from Elsa. We should all be better at simply letting it go. Letting things go. Letting the past go. Forgive. Forget. Like it never even happened. (Easier said than done.) Letting the future go. Be open to possibilities – even the ones you’ve never considered or imagined. Control is over-rated anyway. (Easier said than done.) I learned the lesson of letting go awhile...
The Beastie Boys crashed into the mainstream in the mid-'80s rapping about "The New Style" and yelling "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)," their brash hedonism striking a chord with hip-hop fans and suburban metalheads alike. This loud, obnoxious blend of hard rock and rap, showcased on their debut album, Licensed To Ill, wound up having a lasting impact, but the trio of Adam Yauch, Adam Horovitz, and Mike Diamond were young punks and restless artists. Licensed To lll, is one of...

By Tom Emery Though action in Illinois during the American Revolution was limited, many locales in the state are named for Revolutionary War figures, and you don’t have to look far to find examples. Several towns and over twenty Illinois counties are named in honor of individuals who had some tie to the fight for independence. Five Illinois counties are named for men who signed the Declaration of Independence, including Jefferson, Franklin, Hancock, Carroll, and Lee. The Revolutionary influence is indicative of the reverence that early A...

Under both programs, the agency follows a five-step process to determine if an adult has a qualifying disability. In response to President Biden’s Executive Order on Transforming F...
By Tom Emery Today in Illinois and elsewhere, the Fourth of July is a holiday for boating, barbecues, and fireworks. Over 180 years ago, the celebrations were more scripted and formal, though fireworks were always a constant. Back then, revelry on July 4 was an all-day affair, complete with processions, bands, and a multitude of speakers. The events were large and sweeping, and most of the town took part. In many events, the men of the town gathered at a local tavern or hotel for dinner, complete with thirteen formal toasts – one for each of t...
