A public hearing was held for the amended budget for fiscal year 2023 prior to the Staunton Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, June 20. The explosion that took place on Thursday afternoon, June 22, at the Winchester ammunition plant at Olin Corp. in East Alton killed a Bunker Hill man. Oscar "Zeke" R. Bettorf, age 60, a truck driver was pro- nounced deceased by Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn. Bettorf was the driver of a semi loaded with shotgun shell primers that exploded while being transported inside the Winchester ammunition plant, Nonn said. Eleanor June Dubetz, 93, of Benld, Ill., died at Calhoun Nursing & Rehab Center on Monday, June 19, 2023. She was born March 19, 1930, in Mt. Olive to Michael Sr. and Eleanor (Hefner) Jatcko. Ruth Marie Gillespie, 100, of Shipman, Ill., fought a heroic battle to the end of 100 years. She died peacefully on June 23, 2023. Ruth was was born on March 8, 1923, the daughter of Sidney William and Marjory (Leak) Reno. Marjory died following childbirth. Sidney married Genevia Leak who soon became the mother Ruth would know and love. On Aug. 24, 1940, Ruth married Lloyd Gillespie. He preceded her in death in 1988. The amount of guests that are being served at the pantry has been increasing. Over 400 people were impacted in May (and this is the first time that numbers have been that high since December of 2020). The pantry remains extremely stable with inventory, volunteers and a welcoming environment. One hundred five families were served in May, with 11 families being new to the Staunton Helping Hands Center.
