The garden shed at Duda Park was recently updated as part of an art project with funds provided by the Illinois Art Council, Summer Youth Employment in the Arts Program and in conjunction with The MAC. Supporting the work were Mayor Craig Neuhaus and Parks and Recreation Alderman Terry Tipler. Several local artists and painters participated in the project. This was their first day on the job. The Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund donated two automated external defibrillator (AED) devices to the Staunton High School Shooting Sports Team and the Staunton Soccer and Baseball/Softball organization. Greg Holthaus was a seemingly healthy 18-year-old graduate of Highland High School where he played football and baseball. He died suddenly from cardiac arrest in 2013. On Feb. 2, 1923, the Staunton Volunteer Fire Department officially came into existence with a vote of the Staunton City Council. A 1923 REO fire engine with an open cab and 250-gallon-per-minute pump had already been purchased, so now they just needed the manpower to respond to fires. At that same meeting, Mayor Paul D. The Staunton firemen have put in a lot of time and effort into planning this coming weekend in Staunton. They have put together all the carnival rides, music, food, parade, and fireworks needed to make this weekend lots of fun for all. A tow truck driver was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Friday, June 9, and accused of falling asleep at the wheel before a crash that killed an 82-year-old Staunton man. Charges allege that on Oct. 18, 2022, Shawn D. Millfelt, 26, of St. Charles, Mo., was driving a tow truck loaded with two U.S. Postal Service mail trucks when he fell asleep while driving in West Alton. Thursday, December 25, 1975 -- Commentary on Looking Back photo -- In April of 1925, the city of Staunton began surveys of how best to supply the growing city with clean water. After studying the alternatives, it was decided in October, 1925 to build a dam on the Cahokia-East Fork site as recommended by Illinois State Department of Health. One of the worst was in 1953-54, when much of the Midwest was parched amid one of the most brutal heat waves on record. Rainfall in some areas in 1953 was as much as sixteen inches below normal. Ham radio operators from the Macoupin County Amateur Club will be participating in a national amateur radio exercise from 1 p.m. on Saturday until 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 and 25, at The Macoupin County Fairgrounds. The event is ARRL Field Day an annual amateur radio activity organized since 1933 by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States. Bentley Eugene Beer passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his parents on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. Funeral services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21. Bentley was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., at 8:30 a.m. on June 10, 2023, to parents Justin and Amanda (Lemke) Beer. He was baptized in Christ on June 11. Winford Earl Boulch died June 9, 2023, in Portland, Ore., one day before he turned 91. Win was born June 10, 1932, to James and Lura Boulch in the township of Good Water, Mo. He married his wife, Vivian, on Jan. 5, 1995, in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives. His family moved to a farm in New Douglas, Ill., where he graduated from high school. He enjoyed returning to class reunions and visiting with classmates throughout the years. The Tour De Donut is scheduled to return to Staunton on Saturday, July 8. This year marks 35 years for the event being staged in Staunton. The members of the Staunton Senior Citizens sat down to a catered luncheon at 12 noon on June 15. The June 15 meeting was then called to order at 1 p.m. by President Gerri Cook. Another great day at the Staunton Country Club for the women's league. The low gross was the team of Sue Stiegemeier and Karen Crosslin (41). The low net was the team of Rosemarie Pickerill and Linda Rohe (20). Bev Kramer and Martha Riley had a chip-in on #6 and low putts (10).
