BY AUSTIN GRABOW/STAR-TIMES For as long as I can remember, I have felt out of place or perhaps misplaced in the wrong generation. Being born in the beginning of 1998 means that I am officially considered to be a Millenial (1981 to 1998). After Millenials, comes Generation Z (Gen. Z), which is 1999 to 2016. On paper it looks like nothing, but to be connected to 17 year period of time where I was only alive for eight months of the final year is interesting. Both Millenials and Gen. Z are considered to be technically savvy, with Millenials being...

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is once again under the spotlight after a manager failed to consult a collections committee before purchasing a 21-star flag whose description as a rare banner marking Illinois' 1818 admission to the Union is disputed. The flag's acquisition through an online auction for more than $15,000 precipitated an investigation by Illinois' Office of the Executive Inspector General about money used for the purchase. The purchase also led to division in t...
The next children’s program will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m. The featured book will be Red Riding Hood, retold and illustrated by James Marshall. The community of Staunton has received, and hopefully will continue to receive, a love of very good publicity thanks to an annual Tour de Donut bicycle race. But an event such as this does not run automatically by itself – it needs the very real support of local volunteers. Past races have drawn over 1,000 participants. This years race is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, at 9 a.m. Sullivan Drugs in Staunton is still looking for people willing to donate some time for this event. By Tom Emery Happy Birthday, Old Glory. 247 never looked so good. This year marks the 247th anniversary of the establishment of the official American flag, which was created by an act of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The admission of new states, and a surprisingly vague design pattern of the flag, have led to numerous changes since. Exactly when the Stars and Stripes was created is a matter of debate, but one thing is clear – it is highly unlikely that Betsy Ross had anything to do with it. According to the legend, Ross, a P...

By JIM EDGAR and JOHN SHAW As we all know, the United States is in the midst of a bitterly contentious political campaign in which the presidency and control of Congress are in question. Analysts say that the United States faces graver threats to its national security than it has in decades, perhaps ever. War is raging in Europe and the Middle East; tensions are rising in Asia; tempers are flaring across America. In the face of all this acrimony and conflict, it is tempting to turn off the TV, stop reading the newspaper, and tune out the...

Overview Of 1960-1969 The decade of the 1960’s saw the baseball program continue its dominance, as well as football’s return to prominence. Combined, the two sports won fourteen of twenty possible conference titles in the decade. Unfortunately, the basketball program fell on hard times and, in fact, failed to secure even one winning season in the 1960’s. While no new sports were added during the era, golf did disappear as an option for SHS Students. The 1960s witnessed numerous changes to the South Central Conference. The first two years of th...
