    Helen Kostadin Kern celebrated her 104th birthday with family and friends at San Gabriel's in Highland. She was born May 19, 1919, in Livingston to parents, Joseph R. Kostadin, Sr. and Barbara (Skertich) Kostadin. She had three older sisters and one younger brother. After graduating from high school, she moved to Chicago and worked 38 years in payroll for Mars Candy Co. She married Roy Kern in Chicago, and they were married for 46 years.   • Cruise-in makes over $16,000 for Make-A-Wish

    The third annual Strut Your Stuff Cruise-In, sponsored by McKay Auto Parts, raised over $16,000 for the Illinois chapter of Make-A-Wish on Saturday, May 20. This year's event was held at Concordia Hall in Staunton with 86 cars participating and live entertainment by P'Nut and the Shells. Tim Miller of Staunton took home top honors for the Car Cruise Entry Grand Prize and Loran Kovaly of Staunton won the weekend NASCAR package at World Wide Technologies Raceway.     This year marks the 18th year that Madison Communications has sponsored the Teacher of the Year awards contest. Madison has proudly contributed over $27,000 to local area schools through this program. The Teacher of the Year program annually presents an award to three teachers. Teachers employed at school districts within Madison's service areas are eligible to be nominated for this award.
