    On Saturday, May 20, Benld Adopt-A-Pet held a low-cost vaccination clinic at 213 W. Main Street in Mt. Olive. "This was our first attempt at staging such an event and we believe that, all in all, things went reasonably well." said Bill Castagno, communi- cations director at Adopt-A-Pet.   • County purchases new building for voting center across from courthouse

    Macoupin County voters will have a new place to early vote in person starting in 2024, County Clerk Pete Duncan announced recently. The county has purchased an office building just across the street from the courthouse in Carlinville that will serve as the Macoupin Voting Center. Utilizing the grant the Election Office received as being named one of the 10 centers for election excellence nationwide, Duncan worked with the Macoupin County Board to purchase the building without using any taxpayer dollars.     James A. Smith, 76, of Staunton, Ill., died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield on Sunday, May 21, 2023. He was born March 18, 1947, in Litchfield, to Kenton and May (Yakos) Smith. He married Cheryl J. Cherry on June 7, 1980, in Benld. She survives. He was retired after having been a dispatcher for the Illinois State Police. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Vietnam era. James was a member of the VFW of Staunton, and a 45-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Staunton.     Richard A. Sturgill, 87, of Livingston, Ill., died at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, on Thursday, May 25, 2023. He was born May 22, 1936, in Equality, the son of the late Arzie and Mildred (Lassater) Sturgill. He married Karen J. Turner on April 14, 1974, in Alton, and she survives. He was the owner and manager of Poor Boy Portable Buildings at Rt. 140 and Rt. 4 junction for 28 years, retiring in 2018.     John J. Fraelle, 72, of Benld, Ill., died at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield on Saturday, May 20, 2023. He was born Sept. 10, 1950, in Litchfield, to John J. and Emily (Carter) Fraelle. He married Lynn Bray on Oct. 27, 1989, in Carlinville. She survives. He was retired after having been a foreman for Monterey Coal Co.     The Staunton Junior High track team had 10 athletes compete at the 2023 Class 3A/4A State Track and field meet in East Peoria May 19 and 20. On Friday, Lacie Edwards competed in the 100m dash, made it to the finals, and won 7th overall to receive a state medal with a time of 13.36.
