Strawberry picking started about two weeks early in Belleville, said Chris Eckert, president and CEO of Eckert’s family farm. “People are coming out. We are pleased with the amount of traffic,” he said of customers’ interest in the crop. Beginning in the summer of 2022, a special project was started at the Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary located in Hillsboro. The property has a 50-nest box trail that spans 2.3 miles and the boxes are primarily used by Eastern Bluebirds (target species), Tree Swallows, House Wrens, and occasionally a Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse or Carolina Wren. The Heritage Concert Band will begin its 2024 season with its traditional performance at the Staunton Memorial Day Ceremony, followed by performances at the Benld Cemetery and Gillespie City Hall ceremonies. On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the Class of 2024 Farm Credit agriculture scholars were recognized during a scholarship luncheon at Carriage House Event Center in Altamont, Ill. A total of $75,000 of scholarships were awarded to 30 high school seniors. Each scholar receives $2,500 from FCI to pursue a degree within the field of agriculture.
