Eighty-three Staunton High School seniors received their diplomas during the graduation ceremony held in the gym at Staunton High School on Friday night. There were 12 seniors who achieved the honor of summa cum laude, five who achieved magna cum laude, and nine who achieved cum laude. The Staunton Firemen's annual homecoming celebration is coming up on June 23-25. The Illinois State Police announced the death of another victim in multiple crashes that occurred on May 1, at approximately 10:55 a.m. on both northbound and southbound Interstate 55, between mile markers 72 and 78 near Farmersville in Montgomery County. Ruth M. Rau, 81-year-old from Sorento, succumbed to injuries last week while in the hospital. A total of 72 vehicles are known to be involved in the crashes and 37 people were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical. During Monday night’s city council meeting, the property at 104 E. Main Street and 108 E. Main Street was declared as surplus real property and authorized for sale at a minimum bid of $10,000. All the structures on the property must be demolished and removed by the winning bidder within 60 days of the bid award. Bids will be opened at the June 26 council meeting. Dennis G. Nowell, 72, formerly of Mt. Olive Ill., died peacefully on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, in St. Louis, Mo. He was born in Portageville, Mo., on Oct. 24, 1950, the son of Thomas and Roberta (DeRousse) Nowell. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Knes, in Mt. Olive on June 6, 1970, and she preceded him in death on April 18, 2012. He met Paulette Crawford in 2014, and they married on Sept. 24, 2016. She survives. Curt L. Hicken, 73, of Gillespie, Ill., died at his residence on Thursday, May 18, 2023. He was born Oct. 30, 1949, in Litchfield, to Neal and Mary Lucille (Keck) Hicken. He married Elizabeth Jean Clark on Jan. 1, 1999, in Gillespie. She survives. He was a technical writer for Boeing and an outdoor writer. He was a member of the Carlinville Elks, Masonic Order Gillespie Chapter, Aglow Outdoor Writer's Group where he was also former executive director. He was a musician, avid hunter and fisherman. Herbert C. "Herb" Sievers, 74, of Staunton, Ill., died on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 20, 1948, in Litchfield, the son of the late Charles F. and Vera (Gerdes) Sievers. He married Linda Pass on April 25, 1970, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Staunton, and she survives. Herb was the owner of Sievers Truck Service in Staunton for many years. He started it in 1973 with one truck and over the years grew the business to over 20 trucks.... Full story

Lillian June Strubinger, 91, formerly of Bunker Hill, Ill., died at River Crossing of Alton on Monday, May 15, 2023. She was born July 16, 1931, in Hardwick, Vt., to Chester and June Bailey. Kay Ann Purdy, 81, of Gillespie, Ill., died at Community Hospital of Staunton on Friday, May 19, 2023. She was born July 22, 1941, in East Chicago, Ind., to Henry Wagner and Irma Johanntosettel. She was married to and divorced from the father of her four children. She then married Theodore "Ted" Cummings on Dec. 29, 1989, and he died in August 1998.
