    Morrie Giaudrone, 81, of Gillespie, Ill., died peacefully on Thursday, April 21, 2022, in his home surrounded by loved ones. Morrie was born April 9, 1941, the son of Morris and Helen (Ferrari) Giaudrone in Wilsonville. He graduated from Gillespie High School in 1959 and then earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Southern Illinois University Alton and Edwardsville.   • IDNR recommends halt to use of bird feeders, bird baths through May 31

    The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) issued updated public recommendations on Thursday regarding wild birds and the EA H5N1 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) currently impacting some wild and domestic bird species. While HPAI has not been detected in songbird species (passerines), IDNR recommends the use of bird feeders and bird baths cease through May 31, or until HPAI infections in the Midwest subside, especially those that waterfowl may visit.     The Staunton High School Lady Softball Bulldogs were in Vandalia on April 19 and defeated the Lady Vandals 10-4. After 3 innings, Staunton held a 6-3 lead. The Lady Dogs added 3 runs in the 5th, bringing their lead up to 9-3. Vandalia was able to add one run in the 6th and Staunton came back with a run in the 7th to get the 10-4 win.     The Staunton High School baseball team traveled to Vandalia on Tuesday, April 19. The Bulldogs lost this game in extra innings. They scored 2 in the second inning and added 1 in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead but that was short lived as Vandalia scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th. Both teams added 1 in the 6th and at the end of seven innings, the scored was still tied at 4-4.     The Staunton High School Lady Bulldog soccer team was in Litchfield on Thursday, April 21, and defeated the Panthers 5-1. Staunton 1 - 4 = 5 Litchfield 1 - 0 = 1 Goals by Staunton were by Lily Bruhn 3, Brooke Kinder 1, Breanna Freeley 1 and Haris Legendre had 3 assists. The Lady Bulldogs had 29 shots on goal.     Staunton Frosh/Soph boys and girls competed at a conference meet at Southwestern (Piasa) on Thursday, April 21.
