Staunton had a brand new event this past weekend and it was glowing fun for all ages. The Chamber of Commerce worked closely with Mayor Craig Neuhaus to bring his vision of a Glow Ride to town. Chamber businesses were quick to sponsor the event and volunteers from multiple locations worked together to create a safe, family friendly nighttime bike ride. The Macoupin County Veterans Assistance Commission will be in Benld on Tuesday, May 3, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Assistant Superintendent Bobby Scott will be at the Cahokia Township office and will help qualified veterans and their families with claim work and assistance such as shelter, food, and utilities. Marie lived in the farmhouse on DeCamp Road nearest the mine until 1959. She said some remnants of the mine operation were still there when she was a young girl. John Paul "Boomer" Thomas, 79, of Mt. Olive, Ill., died on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield after suffering a massive stroke. John was born on July 22, 1942, in Mt. Olive, a son of the late John B. and Anna Thomas. He married Barbara Rhoads on Aug. 16, 1980, in Carlinville. She survives. He attended Mt. Betty J. Weiss, 94, formerly of Mt. Olive, Ill., died on April 20, 2022, at Heritage Health Care and Rehab Center in Staunton. Betty was born on Nov. 3, 1927, in Hillsboro, to Benjamin and Nora (Coyle) Busch. She married Kenneth Weiss on Dec. 14, 1946, in Grantfork, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 2010. Charles Raymond Higgins, 70, of Livingston, Ill., originally of Alton, died on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at his residence. He was born on March 20, 1952, in Alton, the son of Kornethea L. Higgins. He was first married to Gail Kathleen Scheibe. She preceded him in death on July 10, 2003. Chuck then married Bernita (Wood) Lutes on Sept. 17, 2011, in Troy, and she survives. Chuck worked as a group leader for Olin Manufacturing in East Alton for 42 years. He enjoyed the company of his dog, T-Bone.... Full story
