Moore spoke of the school receiving $20,000 as part of some grant money. The district has already done some improvements to its schools with this money, but they have money that they would like to spend on Safe Routes to School. The 2024 Fall Recreational Soccer League sign-up's have now begun. Students should be receiving paper forms at school, but don't wait to sign up. Early registration is incentivized heavily this year. A early registration discount of $55 per player will be administered if the player/s are signed up by June 1, 2024. On Tuesday, April 16, the City of Gillespie installed equipment used to push oxygen down to the bottom of the lake, called a destratifier. The motive and reasoning is to help improve the water quality that is being delivered to the plant life material submerged under water. At the Monday, April 15 Staunton School Board meeting, Steven Moore and Brett Allen provided information to the Staunton Board of Educationabout the prospects of installing large fans in the main gymnasium in Staunton's High School as an alternative option to air conditioning that would be more cost effective. Eugene A. “Gene” Bentrup, 86, of Staunton, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024. Gene was born on March 15, 1938 in Staunton to Louis and Ella (Heigert) Bentrup and they preceded him in death. Gene married Shirley on June 9, 1962 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livingston and she survives. Gene served in the U.S. Army and was a Grains Inspector for Toberman Grain and Feed Company in East St. Louis, Ill.
