Thursday, March 1, 1990 -- reading class puts penguins on parade -- What began as simply reading a book turned out to be a highly integrated learning project for students in Gayle Fellin's Chapter I reading class. Fellin, her 42 first through fifth grade students, and many helpers turned their classroom into a delightful display of information about penguins and their habitat. Kenneth R. Stahlschmidt, 81, of rural New Douglas, Ill., died on Monday, April 11, 2022, at Brookstone Estates Assisted Living in Vandalia. He was born on Sept. 14, 1940, in St. Charles, Mo., the oldest child of Raymond and Dorothy (Dwiggins) Stahlschmidt. He married Jean Boas on Sept. 12, 1970, at St. John Catholic Church in Coffeen. Brenda A. Bushman, 61, of Bunker Hill, Ill., died at her residence on Thursday, April 14, 2022. She was born Oct. 19, 1960, in Canada to David and Elizabeth (Prieur) Palmer. Eleanora M. Vesper, 102, of Staunton and Worden, Ill., died on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Heritage Health in Staunton. Born Sept. 9, 1919, in rural Worden, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Anna (Sassenberg) Brunnworth. She lived most of her life in Worden, later moving to Staunton. She was a lifelong, active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worden, a member of its Ladies Aid Society and choir, and was an avid quilter. She was also a member of Mt. Youth turkey hunters harvested a preliminary total of 1,258 birds during the 2022 Illinois youth turkey season March 26-27 and April 2-3. In 2021, a total of 1,304 turkeys were taken. The record total was set in 2020 when 1,733 turkeys were harvested. This year, a total of 5,032 youth turkey permits were issued, compared to 5,589 in 2020.
