Thursday, January 18, 1990 -- Work continues on Sewer, water lines -- Mild winter weather has allowed work on the city sewer project and water line leaks to continue. Earlier this week Rust Company was laying part of the new sewer line on West North Street. In the process, traffic on certain connecting streets was prohibited. Mary A. Kalika, 91, died peacefully on March 31, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. Mary was born March 1, 1931, in Livingston, the daughter of Anton and Catherine (Spagnola) Pellizzaro. She married the love of her life, Frank Kalika, on Oct. 13, 1951, and they settled in Staunton where she was a lifelong resident. Walter R. Dixon, 86, of Bunker Hill, Ill., died at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis, Mo., on Wednesday, March 30, 2022. He was born March 25, 1936, in Hardin, to Leon John Dixon and Flora Ogal Ingersol Dixon. He married Jessie Singleton on Jan. 12, 1957, in Batchtown. She survives. Jerome Dean "Jay" Hyde, 84, of Gillespie, Ill., died at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield on Monday, March 28, 2022. He was born May 26, 1937, in Pocahontas, Ark., to Samuel and Irene (Thompson) Hyde. He married Lorraine Robertson on Sept. 5, 1959, in East St. Louis. He was a coal miner for Monterey Coal Co. Lyle Ardis Caveny, 94, of Gillespie, Ill., died at her residence on Friday, April 1, 2022. She was born April 3, 1927, in Sparland, to Lyle and Emma (Cummins) Duncan. She married Edward Caveny in 1949 in Shipman, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 23, 1990. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed baking pies, reading, sewing and embroidering. Norman Carl Viehweg, 95, of Mt. Olive, Ill., died at Heritage Health in Gillespie on Thursday, March 24. Norman was born on Nov. 15, 1926, the first-born child of Carl and Clara Viehweg. He attended Mt. Olive School, and then went to work for his father who owned and operated Sunshine Dairy. He was later employed as a custodian by Hano Corporation in Mt. Olive. The H & B Bremer Sanctuary is excited to announce that they have one barred owl owlet located in their traditional nest box this year.
