Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Wednesday announced the release of nearly $60 million in grant funding to help local governments develop public parks and open spaces, over 20 percent of which will go to “distressed” communities. The money through the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grants was distributed to 118 projects, all but one ranging from $102,800 to $600,000 per grant. The Staunton Chamber of Commerce is hosting Casino Night this Saturday, March 11, at Concordia Hall, 709 South Union Street in Staunton. Tickets prices are $65 in advance or $70 each at the door. Blake Streeb, age 30, of Mt. Olive, was sentenced on Friday to 40 years in prison for first-de- gree murder in connection with a fatal beating on Aug. 7, 2022. Streeb will be required to serve 100 percent of the sentence. Streeb attacked Michael Raey, age 25, inside a home in Granite City. Reay died on Aug. 10 from the injuries he received during the attack. Victoria "Toni" Jenkins, 69, of McKenzie, Tenn., formerly of Illinois, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at The Waters in McKenzie. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Nov. 12, 1953, to Vernon and Dorothy (Jones) Stearns. She is a retired retail associate for Walmart. Peter Strohbehn, 83, of Gillespie, Ill., died at his residence on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, after a short battle with cancer. He was born July 12, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa, to Emil and Cora (Cook) Strohbehn. He married Betty A. Bruhn in 1969 at St. Michael's Church in Staunton. They spent 53 years together. Dr. Philip Herman Dennis, Sr., 97, of Bunker Hill, Ill., died at his residence on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023. He was born Dec. 1, 1925, in St. Louis, Mo., to Herman and Helena (Holten) Dennis. He married Patricia Brown, who survives. He was a medical doctor. Philip was a member of the AMA, Illinois State Medical Society, American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and Kappa Alpha Psi. Joy M. (Fraker) Mishanec, 88, of Staunton, Ill., died Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Aspen Creek of Troy, Ill. She was born March 21, 1934, in Forks, Wash., the daughter of the late Eugene V. and Ora A. (Crippen) Fraker. She married Joseph A. Mishanec on March 20, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton, and he survives. She was an L.D. high school teacher in Staunton for over 20 years. Estella Mae (Mead) Wood, 84, formerly of Bunker Hill, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 22, after complications due to extended health issues. She was born May 1, 1938, a daughter of the late Carl Francis and Mable Irene (Hahn) Mead. She married James Dale Wood, and he preceded her in death in 2004. Estella enjoyed baking bread for various functions. She enjoyed the animals she cared for while living on the family farm in Illinois until she was no longer able. Kevin Scott Knezik, 60, of Edwardsville, Ill., died on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born on June 12, 1962, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, the son of Rudolph V. Knezik and Gloria M. (Lesicko, Knezik) Blechle. Kevin graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1980. Dr. William G. Miller, 76, of Worden, Ill., died on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born April 3, 1946, in Worden, and was the son of the late George and Verna (Ursprung) Miller. He married Wanda Smith on Dec. 31, 1996, in Tampa, Fla., and she survives. He was employed by The Olin Corporation facility in Tampa, Fla., as general manager. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Ellsworth Daniel Parish Jr., 76, of Alhambra, Ill., died on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023, at his residence. He was born on Nov. 10, 1946, in Litchfield, the son of Ellsworth D. and Florence (Lynch) Parish. Shiela Joan Sander, 50, of Bunker Hill, Ill., died at her residence on Saturday, March 4, 2023. She was born July 2, 1972, in Alton, to Carl Gray and Billie McCauley. She married Jon D. Edward O. Hormann Jr., 61, of Staunton, Ill., died at Community Hospital of Staunton on Friday, March 3, 2023. The Staunton Band Boosters is partnering with Little Italy’s Pizza for two fund-raiser nights. On Monday, March 13, and Thursday, March 16, the Staunton Band Boosters will receive a percentage of pizza sales to benefit the entire band program, grades 5-12. The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has announced the recipients of the 2023 Small Equipment Grant Program. A total of $1.5 million was awarded to 64 fire departments/districts and EMS providers across the state. Thursday, July 17, 1975 -- Dipping into Old Man Mose's Bucket -- In my reminiscences of Staunton I believe that a brief history of the educational facilities would possibly not be amiss. Although I was past school age when I came to Staunton, I have naturally been keenly interested in the community schools, and largely through the courtesy of the late Mrs. Jessie S. Sparr, I was able to learn much of the early school history of the community's efforts to make available an adequate education for the young residents throughout the years....
