    Feb 2, 2022

Feeding and watching the birds can be a pleasant winter pastime. In my neck of the woods it's impossible to ignore the streak of bright blue flying from one tree branch to another. It's also impossible to ignore the sight of a giant woodpecker. I don't usually see bluebirds in the dead of winter, but six to eight eastern bluebirds have been flitting around my backyard since mid-January. Other birds have also been hard to miss with black-capped chickadees, tufted titmouse, red headed...

    Feb 2, 2022

By: Jill Pertler There are two types of people in this country: those who have a car and those who don’t. There are good reasons for living on each side of the roadway. People without a vehicle often live in areas where public transportation is the norm and street-space is not. If you don’t have a garage or a driveway, you might have to pay for parking on a daily basis. That adds to the cost of car ownership, which is no fun. Multiply that if you have to drive around the block multiple times in search of an open space. Parking aside, the act...

  • LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

    Feb 2, 2022

Compliments on a great job To the editor: Just wanting to compliment school board president Dr. Poonam Jain for being in the picture with the SHS Illinois State Scholars. I don’t believe I have ever seen a picture like that before, but I think it is very impressive due to the fact that the school board members are a big part of every child’s education just as the teachers are. Due to the fact that they have to make the decisions on how the school is run so the children can get a good education. I personally feel the board, administrators, tea...

  • NOW HERE'S A TIP!

    Feb 2, 2022

    * If you store nail polish in the fridge, it will dry more quickly and last longer. * "In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It'll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh." -- G.G. in New York * As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they...

  • To You … With Love,

    Feb 2, 2022

Occasionally, I used to visit the place called God’s Kingdom. It lay quiet as a kitten where two rivers flow, and for a time it was my kingdom. It was a world of foghorns and tugboats cutting slices through my bedroom window at 3 a.m. and sharing life with one determined river rat that refused to vacate the parsonage. Along with M. Rat, I was given a thousand potholes on those muddy roads, one awesome flood, and some yellow f...
